Royal Australian Navy Says Ahoy! to Putrajaya Night Marathon 2011

The Putrajaya Night Marathon (PNM) 2011 which is happening this 15 October 2011, Saturday night in our administrative capital has drawn interesting participation including a group of runners from the HMAS Sirius, one of only two replenishment ships of the Royal Australian Navy.

The HMAS Sirius is calling on Port Klang and the timing coincided with the Putrajaya Night Marathon this weekend.
"It is a nice coincidence that our ship is in Port Klang at the time of the race. So we thought it is a good opportunity to both represent the ship and participate in local community events. And eight of us have signed up to run in the race.  We have a mix across the ranks and the jobs. So we have managed to get a really good bunch together. We're very proud to be representing our ship and our country. You will find us running in navy blue and yellow singlets with our ship's crest on them on the night," said Leading Seaman Physical Trainer (LSPT) Candice Freeman on behalf of her running mates.
Running with Freeman are fellow shipmates Kylie Faulks,  Meggan Thwaites, Chris Cox, Richard Raymond, Nicholas Boucher and Donovan Kirk.
This is the first time that they are running in a race in Malaysia and will also be the first time that these navy personnel are visiting Putrajaya. They are excited at the prospects of challenging themselves in a different climate.
"Being from a different climate, we are very happy with the fact the race is (held) at night and we're all very excited. It's a new experience for all of us However, we are only competing in the 5km category," Freeman said.
"We have not had the time to train for a marathon. That said, our competitors are all extremely fit sailors who train on a daily basis. I'm expecting everyone to run a sub 25 minute race as a minimum. There's no doubt the biggest challenge for us will be the heat. We've all competed in races like this before but not in this kind of humidity. We have a big emphasis of hydration leading into the race so we feel we are well prepared," added Freeman.
In preparing for the run, all eight runners have been pounding the treadmill on the ship and a 210m loop around the upperdecks on the ship. The two fully equipped gym containers that come with all sorts of cardio and weights equipment have also been handy in their training.
The sailors are looking forward to competing in the race at night and also watching the marathon before the start of their race. "We also can't wait to mingle with the locals and maybe make some new friends," Freeman said in an email reply. "The expectations are that it is going to be very fast. We know that running is very strong in Asia at this moment as we saw from the last Olympics, so it's going to be tough, but we're ready to take you on!"
HMAS Sirius was built as a double-hulled commercial product tanker, MV Delos and purchased by the Commonwealth Government on 3 June 2004. Named Sirius, the ship underwent modification for underway replenishment. In addition, a flight deck was fitted for helicopter operations.
The ship can carry over 34806 cz of fuel including 5486 cz of aviation fuel for use by RAN helicopters. Sirius can replenish ships at sea by day and night, and is capable of replenishing two ships at a time. She has transfer points for fuel, water and stores.
HMAS Sirius measures 191.3 metres in length and is based in Perth, Australia.
