Rotary Club Charity Walkathon 2011

A four-kilometer walkathon to be organised in Johor Bahru on March 6 is expected to raise RM 500,000.
The walkathon will be organised by the Rotary Club of Johor Bahru, and proceeds will go to the club’s hemodialysis centre and also the Johor Bahru Palliative care centre.
The walkathon is expected to attract about 300 participants, said organising chairman, Freddie Loong Hoo Hin, during a press conference at the Johor Bahru Rotary Club’s office.
Johor Bahru Rotary Club haemodialysis centre chairman, Ng Swee Poh, said that the centre started its service since 1991.
He revealed that the centre is in need of funding to reduce the financial burden of treatment for the patients.
Currently, the centre charges RM60 for a dose of EPO (erythropoietin) per patient.
Patients seeking hemodialysis treatment generally require six to eight doses of EPO per month.
Johor Bahru Palliative Care Centre’s medical officer, Dr Gavri Devi Arasu, said the number of patients at the palliative care center has been increasing over the past year, which has resulted in higher operational expenses.
The bulk of expenses are spent on medical employees’ salaries, travel expenses, allowances, medical equipment, supplies and training.
The walkathon will start at 8am on March 6 at Dataran Bandaraya in Johor Bahru.

NBD Run 2011

Founded in 2010 by the committee of National Blood Donation (NBD), we are hoping more than 2000 participants come and join us in this meaningful event. Just so you know, the National Blood Donation Run (NBD RUN) is a sport event catered to passionate runners as well as amateur ones from both local and international grounds. This is the first time NBD carrying out the charity run, in the hope of creating public awareness about the importance of donating blood. With the slogan of “A drop of blood, an ocean of hope”, NBD is coming in a big way. NBD Run vows all participants get to know the benefits of donating blood. Besides that, this much-anticipated event is going to rock in town as trophies, finisher's medals, certificates and other enticing prizes are given out to those who have accomplished the run at their best as well as to those who take part in this enjoyable event.

Lastly, tears of a mother cannot save her Child. But your Blood can. You don’t have to have a medical degree to save a life. Just a fair degree of humanity. We need you to save life!

PJ Half Marathon comes back

THE PJ Half Marathon, the country’s first 21km run, will be back this year.

The 24th edition of PJ Half Marathon will be jointly organised by the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and The Star.
MBPJ deputy mayor Puasa Md Taib said they were pleased to revive the PJ Half Marathon.
“For some reason, the PJ Half Marathon was not organised for the past three years. But now, we have joined forces with The Star to make the event a more exciting and interesting affair this year,” said Puasa after a meeting with representatives from The Star.
The Star’s delegation was led marketing services general manager Iris Tan.
This year’s PJ Half Marathon will also be meaningful one. The Star will be celebrating its 40th anniversary and MBPJ wants the half marathon to be part of Petaling Jaya’s fifth City day celebrations.
Petaling Jaya was declared a city in 2006. We have lined up a series of programmes to celebrate the fifth anniversary. And the PJ Half Marathon will be one of the main events,” said Puasa.
However, the date for the PJ Half Marathon has not been finalised.
“We are looking at the local athletics calendar as well as the major festivals before making the final decision on the date for the event. We do not want the PJ Half Marathon date to clash with any other major athletic event,” said Puasa.
The PJ Half Marathon, despite not offering any cash prizes, has always attracted a big number of participants.
In 2007, about 5,000 participants took part in the event. Besides the 21km, the event also has 10km and 5km categories.
